This major is intended to prepare middle and high school teachers (with state teacher licensing in English/language arts or Social Studies). The requirements provide breadth in the liberal arts and study in the professional discipline of education, with emphasis on the instructional needs of the adolescent and young adult. Specialization areas are: English/language arts (literature, informational texts, reading, writing, speaking, listening) and social studies (history, political science, economics) Student teaching is done in one of grades 6 through 12 during the spring semester of the senior year.

Choose One Focus Area: English/Language Arts or Social Studies
English/Language Arts for Teaching Grades 6-8 (23 hours)
English/Language Arts for Teaching Grades 9-12 (29 hours)
Complete all course requirements for the English/Language Arts Teaching Grades 6-8 (23 hours).
Choose one course from each of the following Literature Periods (6 hours):
Social Studies for Teaching Grades 6-8 (27 hours)
Historical Foundations:
U.S. History Course at the 100-level or above (3 hours)
European History Course at the 200-level or above (3 hours)
Non-Western History Course at the 200-level or above (3 hours)
State focused course in ECO, HIS, HUM, HSB or POL (3 hours)
World focused course in ECO, HIS, HUM, HSB or POL (3 hours)
Social Studies for Teaching Grades 9-12 (36 hours)
Complete all course requirements for the Social Studies Teaching Grades 6-8 (27 hours).
Total Credit Hours (Minimum 128)
* On occasion, technical and/or program requirements may also meet specific core curriculum requirements. Please confer with your program advisor to determine which courses, if any, may be counted accordingly. All Bachelors programs at Lenoir-Rhyne require at least 128 credit hours. If, in combination, core, technical, and program requirements do not generate at least 128 hours, additional credits must be completed to achieve 128 hours. These classes may be general electives, or a student may complete a minor or additional major.
