PAP 545 - Behavioral Science and Social Issues This course provides students with an overview of behavioral medicine, broadly defined as an interdisciplinary field that aims to integrate biological, cultural, and psychosocial perspectives on human behavior. The integration of mental disorders and behavioral problems into primary care medicine will be addressed. Topics covered will include identification and treatment options for commonly encountered psychiatric disorders; normal and abnormal psychological development in pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients; and detection and treatment of addiction and substance abuse including opioids (MAT training). Students will learn interpersonal and communication skills, and practice patient counseling and education. Other topics include human sexuality; cultural diversity and religion; end of life issues (death and dying); response to illness, injury, and stress; and principles of violence identification and prevention.
