COM 334 - Media Law and Ethics in the Age of AI

Prerequisite(s): COM 120
In an era of AI-generated content, deepfakes, disinformation, and platform-driven speech, how do we know what to trust? This course explores how laws and ethical frameworks shape the media we consume and create. Grounded in First Amendment law, but deeply engaged with philosophical questions of truth, authorship, and responsibility, students will examine how media shapes our understanding of reality and how legal systems attempt to regulate it. We will explore landmark Supreme Court cases, media ethics, and new dilemmas created by AI and digital culture. By the end of the course, students will develop a critical, ethical, and legal lens for engaging with today’s complex media environment – as audiences, creators, and/or aspiring legal professionals. When Offered: Even Spring
