The modern language program in Spanish is designed to provide students with appropriate linguistic skills to develop a knowledge and sympathetic understanding of cultural differences and to inform them of the civilization, culture, literature and other social and artistic achievements of the respective countries. The program is flexible enough to accommodate students seeking a degree in a modern language, a degree in international business or international economics, a double major or simply a minor in a modern language. The Spanish major earns a B.A. degree.
Honors
Students majoring in Spanish and judged qualified by the faculty may, upon invitation, elect to pursue honors work in Spanish. To graduate with honors in Spanish, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/B, a minimum major GPA of 3.2, and complete nine credits of honors courses in the major, including SPA 499. In addition, they must pass an oral examination and be approved by the faculty. The 499 course does not count toward the major requirements.

Major Requirements (30 Hours)
A prerequisite of SPA 111 Spanish Language and Intercultural Communication II or passing score on placement test is required for any SPA course at the 200-level or above. Culture Courses
Choose six credits from the following 200-level courses: Major Electives (24 Hours)
Any course used to meet the Culture Courses above may not also be used as an elective course here. Only three hours of 100-level courses may be used. Only three hours of 200-level courses may be used, Choose 24 hours from the following: General Elective Credits
General Electives (49 hours) as needed to reach 120 hours overall. Total Credit Hours - Minimum 120 hours
On occasion, technical and/or program requirements may also meet specific General Education requirements. Please confer with your program advisor to determine which courses, if any, may be counted accordingly. All bachelor’s degree programs at Lenoir-Rhyne require at least 120 credit hours. If, in combination, General Education, technical, and program requirements do not generate at least 120 hours, additional credits must be completed to achieve 120 hours. These classes may be general electives, or a student may complete a minor or additional major. |
