General Education Requirements

General Education at Lenoir-Rhyne University allows students to explore classes in order to experience breadth and depth across different disciplines and provide a foundation for lifelong learning. The model for general education encompasses five learning areas that enhance self-awareness and vocational discernment: 1) Global Challenges, 2) Communication, 3) Health and Wellness; 4) Ways of Knowing the World, and 5) Professional Transitions.

NOTE: The Upper Division Global Challenge and the Professional Transitions sections below are Graduation Requirements (4 hours) that are not included in the 37 hours of General Education requirements that are. **GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS are not transferred with associate degree like the General Education requirements.

Global Challenges (12 hours)


The Global Challenges section consists of a total of 12 credit hours in four sections: First Year Experience; Language and Culture; Lower Division Global Challenges; and Upper Division Global Challenges.

First Year Experience (3 hours)


Students are expected to complete FYE 100 in their first semester unless an exception is approved by the Director of General Education.

Language & Culture (3 hours)


Students should choose at least 3 hours from the following courses.

Global Challenges Upper Division (3 hours)


Students should choose at least 3 hours from the following courses. **GRADUATION REQUIREMENT (Not transferred with associate degree) These hours are counted as graduation requirements in addition to General Education.

Health & Wellness (at least 2 hours)


Students must complete one of the following options for a minimum of 2 hours.

Ways of Knowing the World (19 hours)


Students will take 19 hours of Liberal Arts and Sciences courses from five categories: Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Mathematics.

Humanities (6 hours)


Students must choose courses from two different disciplines; one must be a REL course.

Professional Transitions** (at least 1 hour)


Most students will take LR 410 unless their major requires one of the courses below that meet the goals for this course. **GRADUATION REQUIREMENT (Not transferred with associate degree) These hours are counted as graduation requirements in addition to General Education.
