POL 519 - Public Policy: Institutions & Process This course focuses on policy development, theory, and analysis methods. This focus includes the role of politics, interest groups, elected leaders, public opinion, and government institutions in the formulation and implementation of public policy. The course will also discuss the influence of power, wealth, participation, and the changing role of the media in public process. Topics will include transportation, social policy, housing, education, health, justice, and environmental policy with the sphere of sustainability. The course will analyze the impact of multiple frameworks and theories with a critical eye on social construction and how policy affects one’s own social group and the “other”. In addition, the course aims to prepare students to effectively analyze and plan public policy through an understanding of several theoretical and methodological approaches. The course will introduce students to several case studies that capture different policy developments and various elements to sustainability across broad policy topic areas.
