CHS 555 - Foundations of Wesleyan Mission, Practice, and Belief The course identifies key persons, events, cultural influences, theological convictions, doctrinal affirmations, and ecclesial practices which characterized the Wesleyan/Methodist revival in eighteenth century England and the transition to North America and provided the foundation for the formation of the Methodist family of denominations. The emphasis is placed on the integration of history, doctrine, and polity as essential to the identity and mission of “the people called Methodists.” The course also requires student formation in Wesleyan works of piety and works of mercy as a way of entering the church’s ongoing task of embodying and enacting the gospel for contemporary life. For students pursuing ordination in the United Methodist Church the course is designed to fulfill the first half of the disciplinary requirements for history, doctrine, and polity as outlined in the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church.
