COU 556 - Foundations of Trauma Counseling


This course provides an understanding of the phenomena of trauma and human responses to that trauma as well as the immediate aftermath of traumatic events.  Discussion includes the basic neurobiology of trauma, identifying major types of trauma, the developmental impacts of trauma, and protective and risk factors that may be associated with individual and community responses to potentially traumatic events.  Current and historical theoretical frameworks and conceptualizations of trauma, traumatic stress, and trauma recovery will be explored throughout the course. The association between trauma and psychological syndromes is a key component of this course.
